Uganda’s Bobi Wine Arrested After Submitting Presidential Nomination Documents

Uganda’s presidential nominee Bobi Wine (38) has been arrested one more time, reported some media. The popular music artist and politician was arrested on November 3, 2020 after submitting his presidential nomination documents to the country’s electoral body in the capital Kampala. Uganda presidential election is due to be held in early 2021.

Bobi Wine said to be a staunch critic of the country’s President Yoweri Museveni, has been arrested several times before for his political activities. He is said to be popular among the youth and calling for Museveni who has been in power for 34 years to go.

Arrest of opposition politicians for trivial offences and sometimes no offence at all is common place in the East African Community. With probably exception of Kenya at the moment, most of the regional bloc’s member states have rather flawed and shambolic multi-party political systems that, among others, allow systemic harassment and suppression of opposition politicians and their supporters, and even lack legal provisions for challenging outcomes of elections hence amicable resolution of electoral disputes.
