In the morning of January 15, 2026, registered voters in Uganda descended on polling stations to cast their votes in the country's general elections. That was reported by some African media.

The general elections are 2-tier, entailing presidential election and parliamentary elections.
In the presidential election in particular, there are 8 presidential nominees vying for the country's top political position. The nominees with their political parties in bracket, are as thus.
Incumbent President Yoweri Museveni (NRM)
Bobi Wine born Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (NUP)
Mugisha Muntu (ANT)
Munyagwa Mubarak Sserunga (CMP)
Kasibante Robert (NPP)
Nandala Mafabi (FDC)
Frank Bulira Kabinga (RPP)
Elton Joseph Mabirizi (Conservative)
However, some African political analysts believe that the main battle at the ballot place will be between the incumbent President Yoweri Museveni who seeking a 7th term in office, and his arch rival Bobi Wine. The latter shocked the former in the preceding 2021 Presidential Election by taking home 35% of the vote, hence denying Museveni who won the election with 59% of the vote, a landslide victory that he had been winning uninterruptedly since he came to power 40 years ago.
As regards the general elections per se, the initial stages of the voting are said to have been characterized by delays at some polling stations, that are said to have been caused by some technical issues pertaining to the electoral system's biometric voter verification kits.
Also, the elections are said to have taken place under heavy security and internet restrictions, but calmly and peacefully without any reported significant incidents so far.
Reportedly, the internet restrictions in particular, were introduced on January 13, 2026, with the government there saying that they were necessary for curbing misinformation during the elections. However, the opposition is said to have lambasted the government saying that the restrictions may imply that the elections will not be free and fair.
All in all, Uganda General Elections 2026 could be argued to have indicated the dawn of true multipartyism hence democracy in the East African Community country. That is because, among others, confrontations, often brutal, between security forces and opposition politicians, that were common place in previous elections, were not witnessed on this occasion hence probably have gone away!
