Sudan Dissolves Former Ruling Party

Updated: Dec 1, 2019

Sudan's military-civilian ruling authority alias the Sovereign Council on November 28, 2019 approved a law to dissolve the former ruling party National Congress Party (NCP). That was reported by various media on November 29, 2019. The new law will also allow seizure of NCP's assets. NCP was led by the disgraced former president Omar al-Bashir.

Furthermore, the Sovereign Council endorsed repeal of a controversial public order law dubbed the "immorality law". The latter targeted women and was used to violate human rights of women in the country. By the "immorality" law, women were, for example, prosecuted for wearing trousers!

Local human rights groups are said to have applauded the two legal measures by the transitional ruling authorities as great milestones towards achieving democracy in Sudan.
