Kampala-Jinja Expressway Construction May Begin Soon

Construction of the long-awaited Kampala-Jinja Expressway in Uganda may begin soon. According to announcement made by the government of Uganda in the first half of 2021, construction of the planned impressive expressway is expected to begin in 2022. Winning contractor for the project is expected to be announced soon from a shortlist entailing 4 bidding construction firms. The shortlist was announced by the government there in November 2021.

Kampala-Jinja Expressway is a planned 95 km ultra-modern toll-road that consists of 3 sections, namely: Kampala Southern Bypass (18 km), Kampala Southern Bypass to Namagunga (35 km), and Namagunga to Jinja (42 km). The expressway will reportedly commence with 8 lanes from Kampala Southern Bypass to Namagunga, followed by 4 lanes for the remaining stretch to Jinja.

Construction of the planned Kampala-Jinja Expressway is expected to take five years and cost about $1.48 billion, as of 2021 by the government of Uganda. Already, the government is said to have inked a loan deal with African Development Bank in March 2021, amounting $229.5 million, for financing construction of sections 1 and 2 of the expressway. Financing of construction of the remaining section of the expressway is expected to be through the public private partnership (PPP) model.

Already Uganda has an expressway alias motorway or freeway that is completed and in operation, and one under construction. The motorways are 51 km Kampala-Entebbe Expressway and 22 km Kampala-Mpigi Expressway respectively. Kampala-Entebbe Expressway was completed in 2018, while construction of Kampala-Mpigi Expressway began in 2020 and expected to be completed in 2023.
