Africauptodate

Papua New Guinea's embattled prime minister Peter O'Neill has quitted, reported some media. Mr O'Neill announced the decision to step down on May 26, 2019 to escape a no-confidence vote in parliament, according to the reports.

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has been facing strong criticisms from his opponents over some budgetary issues as well as a controversial massive $13 billion liquefied natural gas project. Also, recent defection by some senior members of his government and ruling party, to the opposition is said to have seriously weakened him politically and contributed to his decision to quit.

Peter O'Neill has been on the throne for seven years.
