Film Director Singleton Is Dead
Renown African American film director John Singleton is dead at 51. He died on April 29, 2019 at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Hospital where he was on life support after suffering a stroke on April 17, 2019.
John Singleton was the first African American to receive an Oscar nomination for best director. He received the nomination for the 1991 landmark movie Boyz n the Hood. The movie starred by Ice Cube and Cuba Gooding Jr portrayed real life of African American youths in communities characterized by drugs and violence.
In addition to Boyz n the Hood, John Singleton directed, among others, the following movies: Poetic Justice (1993), Higher Learning (1995), Shaft (2000), and 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003).
He was also involved in TV series. For instance, he directed and received an Emmy nomination for the iconic The Race Card episode of The People vs O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story (2016).
Furthermore, he directed some music videos including Michael Jackson's famous music video Remember the Time. The video starred Eddie Murphy. Magic Johnson, and Iman.
Further to his invaluable contribution to the movie industry, John Singleton was a staunch campaigner for enhanced involvement of people of African ancestry in film making so that they can narrate their stories.
