A bipartisan US bill in response to the brutal massacre by security forces in Tanzania, of young protesters and other people, during and after the country's sham general elections that were held on October 29, 2026, is on track. The bill also addresses some other human rights abuses by the regime there. That was reported by some US and African media on June 18, 2026.

The bipartisan bill that is titled Reassessing the United States-Tanzania Bilateral Relationship Act was first introduced to the bipartisan US Senate Foreign Relations Committee by some prominent members of the committee on May 20, 2026.

According to the reports, the bill was passed by the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee on May 20, 2026, hence paving the way for subsequent crucial stages of the law making process to begin as thus.

  • First, the bill will now be taken to the full floor of the US Senate for deliberation

  • Second, if the Senate approves the bill, it will then be moved to the US House of Representatives for consideration

  • Third and finally, if the House of Representatives supports the bill as endorsed by the Senate, the bill will be delivered to the US President who may sign or not sign it into new law

If the US President would sign the bill, the enacted new legislation will reportedly authorize the following severe actions against the regime in Tanzania.

  1. Targeted sanctions that will include visa bans, and asset freezing against government, ruling party, and security officials, responsible for human rights abuses, and political repression in Tanzania

  2. Suspension of, among others, economic and development assistance said to currently amounting USD 1 billion per year, and trade support to Tanzania, until meaningful democratic reforms have been put in place in the country

An incredible and powerful bill by the USA, that should be emulated by other democratic nations of the world that have so far given only muted response to the mass murder of unarmed young protesters in Tanzania, who were simply demanding reform of a flawed electoral system.

The regime in Tanzania in its own recent report, says that at least 518 people were killed during the election and post-election protests in the country, without assigning responsibility to the wanton killings except blaming the victims and staunchly supporting the security forces that unleashed the massacre.

However, the UN in reacting to the election protests, observed that at least 700 extrajudicial killings were carried out during and after the elections and the number could be a lot higher, while the country's opposition and some East African human rights groups put the number of people killed by security forces during the protests to between 1000 - 3000.
