Women Take 50% Of Ethiopia's New Cabinet
In a new cabinet announced by Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on October 16, 2018, 50% of the ministerial posts were taken by women.
According to Ethiopian media, the new cabinet consists of 20 ministerial posts, down from 28. 10 posts were given to women, including two ministerial posts pertaining to security, namely minister of defense and minister of peace that were given to Aisha Mohammed and Muferiat Kamil respectively.
The composition of the new cabinet and the award of security ministerial posts to women in particular, is unprecedented in Ethiopia. It presents a major political shift by Mr Ahmed that some analysts believe is aimed at addressing gender inequality and ethnic dissension that characterized the country under previous regimes.
