At Least 136 Dead After Tanzanian Ferry Capsized

A Tanzanian ferry, MV Nyerere, capsized and sank in Lake Victoria on September 20, 2018, killing at least 136 of its passengers, reported various media sources on September 21, 2018.

The accident occurred as the ferry was approaching the docks of the lake's largest island called Ukerewe. 37 people are reported to have been rescued. The exact number of people who were on board the ill-fated ferry is not known, but estimates suggest 300. Ferries travelling in Lake Victoria are often overcrowded and not in good mechanical condition.
