Systemic Violence And Irregularities Prior To By-Elections In Tanzania, Says USA

The US Embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania has observed it has credible evidence of systemic violence and irregularities prior to Tanzania's recent by-elections, reported some media sources on August 16, 2018.
According to the reports, the embassy cited some cases of such violence and irregularities including the following.
1) Refusal by Tanzania's National Election Commission to register opposition candidates
2) Intimidation of opposition candidates including unnecessary arrests, by the police
3) Suppression of freedom of assembly and speech
The by-elections held on August 12, 2018, were prompted by vacant parliamentary seats resulting from defection by some opposition members of parliament to the ruling party (CCM) after allegedly been bribed.
