6 Shot Dead In Post-Election Violence In Zimbabwe

Africauptodate

Deadly violent clashes between protesting supporters of Zimbabwe's main opposition party MDC and army troops erupted in downtown Harare on August 1, 2018, reported various media sources. The troops called in by the police, opened fire as they tried to disperse the protesters, killing at least six people.

The protesters took to the streets after preliminary results of the parliamentary elections announced by Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) earlier in the day, revealed a landslide victory by the ruling party ZANU-PF. Premature victory declaration as well as unsubstantiated vote rigging allegations by the MDC leadership could have also contributed to the actions of the party's supporters.
