Ethiopia And Eritrea Declare Peace And Friendship
In a fast moving political situation between Ethiopia and Eritrea that began in the end of June 2018, the two arch-enemies are reported to have declared an end to their bitter war that has been officially ongoing for more than two decades.
In signing a document for the declaration in Asmara, Eritrea, on July 9, 2018, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and President Isaias Afwerki of Ethiopia and Eritrea respectively, announced a new era of peace and friendship between their countries. They emphasized to work together to foster close cooperation in the political, social, economic, cultural, and security realms. To that effect, they said they will re-open their borders and re-establish diplomatic, trade, transport, and communications ties.
Great political move by Ethiopia and Eritrea that is likely to lead to massive benefits to both. For instance, landlocked Ethiopia with its rapidly developing economy may benefit from accessing Eritrea's ports, while Eritrea may benefit from revenues associated with that.
