Peter Steyl Warns White South African Farmers To Share Land Before It Is Too Late
It was reported on July 22, 2017 that a prominent white Zimbabwean commercial farmer Mr Peter Steyl has warned white South African farmers to share land before it is too late. Mr Steyl who is the president of Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union, emphasized that a land sharing deal between white South African farmers and black South Africans was extremely crucial, if white South African farmers are to avoid suffering similar consequences as their Zimbabwean counterparts. He noted that white Zimbabwean farmers were arrogant, thinking that because their farms very important for Zimbabwe's economy, then nobody could have dared to expropriate the farms from them. The warning by Mr Steyl came at a time when land re-distribution is clearly one of the most critical political issues in South Africa. The issue is said to have brought divisions within the ruling party, African National Congress (ANC), with many of its supporters now demanding land expropriation from white farmers without compensation. At the same time, a new populism-led political party going places, called Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), is steadily gaining popularity for its radical stance about the issue. EFF recently instructed black South Africans to occupy unused land without consent from those who claim ownership.
