Polling stations in Zambia opened in the morning of August 12, 2021, for voters to cast their votes in the country’s general elections. The general elections entail presidential and parliamentary elections.

As for the presidential election, a total of 16 presidential nominees are contesting for the presidential position. However, the race to the top political position is expected to be dominated by a showdown between incumbent President Edgar Lungu (64) of the Patriotic Front party and Hakainde Hichilema (59) of United Party for National Development party. In the previous presidential election in 2016, Edgar Lungu won by defeating Hakainde Hichilema by a very narrow margin of just about 3% of the vote.

Incumbent President Edgar Lungu is seeking second five-year term in office, while Hakainde Hichilema is contesting for the presidential position for the sixth time. More than 50% of the presidential vote is required for a presidential nominee to win it. Otherwise, a presidential rerun election will have to follow. _____________________________ © 2015 - 2021 Africauptodate. All Rights Reserved
