A historic landmark summit between President Donald Trump of USA and President Vladimir Putin of Russia, took place in Anchorage, Alaska, USA, on August 15, 2025. The summit called Trump-Putin Summit alias Alaska 2025, took place at a US military base on the outskirts of Anchorage, under the slogan Pursuing Peace.

According to some US media, the two presidents were accompanied to the summit by their foreign secretaries and a few other senior officials. During the summit that reportedly took about 3 hours, President Trump and President Putin exchanged their perspectives about the ongoing Ukraine War, and some bilateral matters. It is not known exactly what the two leaders agreed, but in a short joint press conference after their meeting, both gave a synopsis of what may have transpired in the summit room.

On the one hand, President Putin who spoke first, observed among others, that the summit was constructive and based on mutual respect, and expressed his desire for a resolution of the Ukraine War, saying that such a resolution will require eradication of the root causes of the war.

On the hand, President Trump said, among others, that the summit was very productive, and added that no Ukraine ceasefire deal was reached but great milestones towards peace there were made.

The Trump-Putin Summit is the inaugural meeting between the leaders of the world's two biggest nuclear powers, since the Ukraine War broke out in February 2022. The summit has made headlines worldwide, and has been perceived in many quarters as crucial because although the bloody war is between Russia and Ukraine; USA, NATO, and most member countries of the European Union bloc have been indirectly involved in it through providing massive military and economic aid to Ukraine. Until this summit, none of the indirect actors in the war, has been willing to talk to Russia, with the believe that their military assistance and some severe economic sanctions they have imposed against Russia, will deliver immense pressure on Russia to end the war, or simply make Ukraine win.

So far, Russia has overlooked the so called West's military and economic support to Ukraine, saying repeatedly that such support will only prolong the war, but eventually its war objectives will be achieved. This unwavering stance of Russia could probably be emanating from recognition that it has massive natural assets that can easily be converted to consumer, capital, military, and medical goods that it needs, given its advanced and sophisticated technological base. This recognition together with the fact that Russia is a nuclear power, make the country almost immune to external economic and military pressure.

The Trump-Putin Summit therefore presents a shift in the above so called West's approach to the Ukraine War, by USA under the MAGA and now renowned global peace President Trump, that is geared towards seeking peace in Ukraine through dialogue. The shift is definitely appropriate and pragmatic, because if the conflict in Ukraine is to be resolved, leaders of all parties involved, directly or indirectly, will have to talk to each other. Even future security of Ukraine may not be guaranteed without involvement of all the parties involved in the current conflict, about how it should look like. In fact, the best assurance for security of countries is balanced, strategic, and good relations with all neighbors. That is an aspect of good governance. Countries should never rely on others for their security. It is also been realistic to understand that wars between countries can occur in any continent. And when they occur, they should not be taken out of context and escalated for some concealed objectives.

After the summit, President Trump observed on social media that efforts should no longer be on seeking ceasefire in Ukraine but a peace deal hence an end to the bloody war. He advised Ukraine to reach a peace deal with Russia because the latter is a formidable military power. How Ukraine will respond to the advice is currently unknown.

All in all, the Trump-Putin Summit is the most significant diplomatic move, so far, towards attainment of durable peace in Ukraine as well as global political depolarization. President Trump should therefore be applauded by all pragmatic people of the world for initiating the summit.
