The highly controversial arrest and incarceration of Tanzania's main opposition leader Tundu Lissu has been propelled to the global legal arena by his international legal team. That was reported by some media on June 1, 2025.

According to the reports, Mr Tundu Lissu's international legal team that is led by the renowned Canadian attorney Robert Amsterdam, filed a damning complaint with the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, on May 30, 2025. In the complaint, the international legal team is said to have petitioned the UN body to declare Mr Tundu Lissu's arrest and incarceration unlawful.

Commenting about the filing, Mr Robert Amsterdam reportedly observed that his legal team was pushing for accountability, not only for the arrest and incarceration of Mr Tundu Lissu, but for all other atrocities that the government of Tanzania has unleashed on its critics. Reportedly, more than 80 critics of the government of Tanzania are alleged to have been abducted and several killed by security forces since 2020.

Mr Robert Amsterdam is said to have continued that, his team of attorneys would also petition the US government to impose sanctions on Tanzania government officials including police officers, prosecutors, and judges, among others, involved in the arrest, and incarceration of Mr Tundu Lissu.

A good move by Tundu Lissu's international legal team, that may contribute to ending once and for all the chronic repression of opposition politicians in Tanzania by the ruling party, that is always rationalized by the now common fallacious claims of safeguarding national peace and sovereignty. The repression violates fundamental principles of multiparty democracy, and particularly denies the country level playing field for all political parties, that is necessary for free and fair elections.
