At least six people have perished in unrest in South Africa after jailing of Ex-President Jacob Zuma, reported some media on July 12, 2021.

The unrest is said to have begun as minor demonstrations in Ex-President Jacob Zuma’s home province of KwaZulu-Natal after he was slapped with a 15-month jail sentence by the country’s Constitutional Court for contempt of court. However, after the ex-president handed himself into jail on July 7, 2021, and began his jail term, the unrest intensified dramatically into violent protests, riots, and looting of retail outlets as well as spreading to other parts of South Africa including Gauteng Province including the commercial capital Johannesburg.

In response to the escalating unrest, the government of South Africa is said to have now deployed military troops to assist the police quell the unrest. _____________________________ © 2015 - 2021 Africauptodate. All Rights Reserved
