According to the press release, EP adopted the resolution by 539 votes, 0 votes against, and 27 abstentions.

More specifically, in the resolution, EP in addressing the deteriorating human rights situation in Tanzania, denounced strongly the following.

  1. Use of violence by Tanzanian authorities against protesters, after the country's general elections that were held on October 29, 2025, that led to thousands of deaths and injured people

  2. Arbitrary and politically motivated incarceration of opposition leader Tundu Lissu who was barred from the electoral process and charged with capital offence

Also and accordingly, EP in the resolution, called on Tanzanian authorities to do the following.

  1. Engage in a political dialogue with the opposition, civil society, and representatives of "victims" probably implying victims of government repression and violence, to address the crisis and enable new, credible, and transparent general elections

  2. Promptly and unconditionally release Tundu Lissu

  3. Abolish the death penalty and commute all death sentences

  4. Ensure a fair probe into killings, enforced disappearances, torture, and other human right violations in Tanzania, that would be carried out by an African-led inquiry commission

Furthermore, EP in the resolution called on the European Union Commission, and the Council of the European Union, to do the following.

  1. Stop direct support to Tanzanian authorities

  2. Consider slapping the people responsible for human rights violations in Tanzania, with sanctions

Great move by EP that should be applauded by all good people of the world. Hopefully, the move will soon be followed by concrete decisive actions by the European Union Commission and the Council of European Union as urged by EP. Such actions could include severe financial sanctions and travel ban on Tanzania's authoritarian leader who is said to have ordered the deadly crackdown by security forces on protesters during and after the recent general elections, and members of the security forces who implemented the order, as well as members of her government and security apparatus, who have been involved in other human rights violations in the East African Community nation.
