Prominent International Rights Groups Lambaste Tanzania For Growing Suppression Of Dissent

Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch (HRW) in their separate reports released on October 28, 2019, lambasted the government of Tanzania for alleged growing suppression of dissent. That was reported by various media worldwide.

More specifically, the two prominent international human rights bodies accused the government of Tanzania of increasing suppression of: political opponents, human rights activists, journalists, independent researchers, and even ordinary citizens. The two human rights groups are said to have also accused the government of Tanzania of enactment or amendment of legislation aimed specifically at allowing or facilitating suppression of dissent, hence suggesting the government there may be using legislation as tool for repression.

So far, the government of Tanzania has been praised in several quarters for impressive performance in delivery of economic development. However, its current rather appalling human rights record may, in the long run, spoil all that! That is because there is no such thing as sustained economic development without human rights. Above all, use of attained economic development milestones to legitimize violation of human rights may prove futile in the long run.

Tanzania is currently ranked 118 out of 180 countries, on the World Press Freedom Index.
