Updated: Jun 28, 2020

Polling stations in Burundi opened on the morning of May 20, 2020 for the country’s 2020 general elections. Over 5 million registered voters are electing a new president and 100 members of parliament.

Battling for the presidential position are seven candidates. However, Evariste Ndayishimiye of the ruling party CNDD-FDD and Agathon Rwasa of the opposition party National Forces of Liberation are said to be the top contenders for the top political post.

Burundi becomes the second country in the world after South Korea, to hold general elections during the coronavirus pandemic. However, unlike South Korea that had over 10 000 of confirmed coronavirus cases and over 200 deaths at the time of its election, Burundi currently has only 42 confirmed cases of the virus and 1 death.

Incumbent President Pierre Nkurunziza is not contesting for re-election on this occasion. He is stepping down after 15 years on the throne.
