Italy has approved a plan to build the longest cross-sea suspension bridge in the world, reported some media on August 6, 2025.

According to the reports, the mammoth suspension bridge will span 3.7 kilometres across the Strait of Messina, linking the mainland's city of Villa San Giovanni and Sicily island's city of Messina. It will consist of 4-lane dual carriageway and 2-track railway at the middle.

The bridge is expected to be completed in 2032 at a cost of $15.6 billion, say the reports.
The decision to build the bridge comes 56 years after it was first proposed and debated by decision makers.
