DeepSeek AI App. Demonstration That Technology Can Not Be Monopolized In The 21st Century

Africauptodate

China's new AI Application alias AI App or AI Chatbot or simply AI model called DeepSeek has taken the world by storm. The advanced AI App that was launched on January 27, 2025, and available free of charge online, instantly became the most downloaded AI App in the world.

DeepSeek AI App is said to have been generated by some researchers based in Guangzhou City, China, at a cost of just $6 million. That is a small fraction of the cost of each of its predecessors, i.e., AI Chatbots generated by some US' hi-tech giants like Open AI, Alphabet (Google owner), Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon, among others. The US AI models, e.g., ChatGPT by Open AI, Gemini by Alphabet, and Co pilot by Microsoft, among others, each reportedly costed several billions of US dollars to develop.

The unexpected sudden arrival of DeepSeek AI App at the global AI technological arena, has had far reaching implications for technology stocks in the world. That has been more so in the US where the hi-tech sector seems to have been caught off-guard by the new Chinese AI Chatbot, due to exaggerated or probably flawed belief that US had sole monopoly or at least unchallenged dominance of the global AI technology.

More specifically, due to the emergence of DeepSeek AI App, the value of US's major tech index Nasdaq's stocks shrunk by a staggering $1 trillion on day one of the launch of the AI App. Also, because of DeepSeek AI App, the market value of Nvidia that manufactures computer chips for powering AI models, fell by a colossal $600 billion, while that of Alphabet plummeted by $100 billion.

The delivery of DeepSeek AI App defies USA's highly questionable measures aimed at retarding and perhaps halting China's hi-tech sector. The measures includes banning export of advanced US made computer chips vital for development of AI models.

More generally, the delivery by China of the now popular DeepSeek AI App demonstrates to the world, the following.

  1. Technological advancement in the 21st century can not be monopolized or dominated by one country or even perhaps group of countries

  2. In the 21st century, cynical attempts by one country or more to retard or deter one country or more in making technological and scientific advancement through protectionist measures like refusing to share research findings, outputs of research development, economically and technologically isolating other countries through sanctions, etc., can have complex backlash as targeted countries strive to fight back in order to become technologically and economically independent. Paradoxically, those countries advocating for technological and economical protectionism for any reason, may find themselves isolated in every aspect of life by the rest of the world. That may have catastrophic consequences especially to those with limited or no natural assets that are necessary for the manufacturing of economic goods

  3. Advanced hi-tech innovations may not necessarily require high expenditures to attain. As such, all countries of the world, income rich as well as less income rich, can make incredible technological and scientific milestones in the 21st century. Afterall, due to brain drain, some of the top experts working in hi-tech sectors in income rich countries hail or have their ethnic origins from less income rich countries, implying that the latter must have good capacities or potential for great technological and scientific innovations if they recognise that and make the right moves!

Scientifically, delivery of China's DeepSeek AI Chatbot should not be seen as a mere challenge to US' self-proclaimed leadership in AI technology, but rather mainly as contribution and support to the current discourse about shifting global economic and power balance in the 21st century. The global economic and power changes are argued to be driven by Asia and particular China, and to certain extents Latin America. Viewed at within the context of the discourse, the delivery of DeepSeek AI App could be argued to have broaden the discourse beyond global economic and power changes to include technological changes. The postulated global economic, power, and technological shifts are unstoppable and may take place faster than currently believed.
