Cardinal Robert Prevost Becomes New Pontiff With Papal Name Pope Leo XIV

Cardinal Robert Prevost (69) has been elected new pontiff alias new Pope of Rome with papal name Pope Leo XIV. His election as the new leader of 1.4 billion Catholics in the world by the College of Cardinals, came on May 8, 2025, on the second day of the Vatican's Papal Conclave 2025.

Pope Leo XIV succeeds Pope Francis who died on April 21, 2025. He becomes the 267th pontiff, and the first pontiff hailing from USA.

Pope Leo XIV was born in Chicago, Illinois, USA, in 1955. After been ordained as priest in Rome in 1982, he became a missionary for many years in Peru where he became a bishop. In 2023 he became an archbishop. In the same year he was named a cardinal by his predecessor Pope Francis.

Pope Leo XIV inauguration mass service will be held on May 18, 2025, according to an announcement by the Vatican on May 9, 2025.
