AU Urges For Prompt Lifting Of Economic Sanctions Imposed On Zimbabwe

Africauptodate

At last the African Union (AU) has reacted strongly against the unjustifiable economic sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe, and calling for their prompt lifting. That was reported by some African media on November 1, 2019. Earlier last month, Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) made a similar call.

The economic sanctions in question were imposed some decades ago by the West, after the government of former president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, introduced land reform policies for redistributing land looted from African peasants by European settlers during the colonial era. The policies addressed a serious flaw in the country's land tenure pattern at the time of its independence in 1980, whereby over 66% of the country's arable land was owned by 400 farmers of European descent. The Western sanctions are also known to have been in retaliation to Mugabe's daring and fearless stance against Western neo-colonialism, among others.

There is no doubt, whatsoever, the Western economic sanctions are the primary factor for the decline of Zimbabwe's economy hence current implacable circumstances there, albeit that is never acknowledged by the West and their close allies and supporters. Lifting of the sanctions would, therefore, definitely enable Zimbabwe to make economic recovery quicker!
