AU's 12th Heads Of State Summit To Launch African Free Trade Area

Updated: Jul 8, 2019

African Union (AU)'s 12th Extra-Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government Summit began on July 7, 2019 in Niamey, Niger. The summit will, among other things, launch the landmark African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The launching of AfCFTA will formalize the coming into force of the continental free trade treaty that occurred on May 30, 2019 after been ratified by 22 AU member states, the minimum number of states required to do so to make it operational. AfCFTA will therefore become operational after its expected launching in Niamey, hence the beginning of creation of a single African market.
