Alpha Conde Wins Guinea’s Presidential Election
Africa | Guinea October 24, 2020
Incumbent President Alpha Conde of Guinea has won with a big margin the country’s presidential election held on October 18, 2020. That was declared by the country’s Independent National Electoral Commission (Céni) on October 24, 2020. According to Céni, Mr Conde won 59.49% of the vote.
Mr Conde's victory comes amid bloody post-election unrests across the country, said to have so far claimed least 26 deaths.
Contrary to Céni’s declaration of Mr Conde as winner of the presidential election, the main opposition leader Cellou Dalein Diallo is said to maintain that he is the one who won the election, and with a landslide victory for that matter. As such, he continued that he intends to appeal to the country’s Constitutional Court against Mr Conde’s victory as declared by the electoral body.
