Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway. First Trans-Border Electrified Railway In Africa



Addis Ababa-Djibouti electrified standard gauge railway is 756 kilometers long. Built at a cost of $4 billion and inaugurated in January 1, 2018, the railway is the first and longest trans-border electrified railway line in Africa.


It is a single track freight and passenger railway line with double track at some places. It comprises of 21 stations 15 of which are for passenger trains. The main station in Ethiopia is brand new Furi-Lebu railway station on the suburbs of the capital Addis Ababa.

The railway line is managed by a multi-national company called Ethio-Djibouti Standard Gauge Railway Share Company alias Ethio-Djibouti Railway (EDR).
