Kenya has expelled Somalia's ambassador in Nairobi and recalled its ambassador in Mogadishu, over disputed maritime territorial area in the Indian Ocean, reported some media on February 17, 2019.
The disputed territorial area is an outcome of different perceptions by the two neighboring nations, about their maritime border in the Indian Ocean, hence two maritime border claims. The disputed area lies between the two perceived border lines.
The disputed maritime territorial area is said to contain vast amounts of oil and gas reserves, with oil reserves estimated at staggering 100 billion barrels.
The dispute between the two countries, over the maritime territorial area has been going on for years, and a case about it is at the International Court of Justice. Current escalation reportedly occurred after Somalia allegedly auctioned some oil and gas blocks located in the area.
