Tanzanian Male MPs May Face Involuntary Circumcision
In an expected turn in a debate in Tanzania's Parliament recently, about how to contain the spread of HIV/AIDS in the country, a female member of parliament (MP) Ms Jacqueline Ngonyani suggested uncircumcised male MPs to be compelled to undergo circumcision, reported some media on February 9, 2019.
MP Ngonyani in elaborating her suggestion, argued male circumcision and that of male MPs in particular was crucial because it is known to reduce risk of HIV/AIDS transmission.
While some male MPs like that for Rombo, probably himself circumcised, agreed with Ms Ngonyani's suggestion; some other male MPs, most likely uncircumcised, are said to have been furious to the extent of calling the suggestion uncouth!
If MP Ngonyani's suggestion were to materialize into some sort of parliamentary rule, then uncircumcised Tanzanian male MPs will find themselves facing involuntary circumcision in order to retain their positions! In such a scenario, the fascinating question that may arise could be what kind of physical evidence male MPs would have to provide to verify circumcision!
