DRC's Constitutional Court Endorses Tshisekedi As Next President
The Constitutional Court of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on the early morning of January 20, 2019, confirmed the leader of the country's main opposition party, Union for Democracy and Social Progress, Felix Tshisekedi, the winner of the recently held presidential election hence the next president of DRC.
The confirmation follows the court's dismissal of an appeal by the leader of another major opposition party, Engagement for Citizenship and Development, Martin Fayulu, against provisional results of the presidential election announced earlier by the country's electoral commission, with Mr Tshisekedi as the winner. In upholding the electoral commission's provisional results of the presidential poll, the Constitutional Court argued that Mr Fayulu failed to provide adequate evidence to support his legal challenge.
President elect Felix Tshisekedi will be sworn in on January 24, 2019. The inauguration will mark the first peaceful transfer of power in DRC since its independence, and probably the beginning of a peaceful and prosperous new era.
