Felix Tshisekedi Wins DRC Presidential Election

The leader of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)'s main opposition party Union for Democracy and Social Progress, Felix Tshisekedi, has won the country's presidential election held on December 30, 2018. That is according to provisional election results declared by the country's electoral commission on the early morning hours of January 10, 2019.

Notwithstanding, however, while the presidential candidate for the ruling party People's Party for Reconstruction and Democracy, Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, seems to have accepted the results, the leader of another major opposition party Engagement for Citizenship and Development, Martin Fayulu, has refused to concede defeat citing ballot rigging.

If Mr Tshisekedi would be confirmed the next president of DRC, he will be the first opposition leader to win the post in the country's modern history.
