Morocco Inaugurates Africa's First High Speed Rail Line
On November 15, 2018, King Mohammed VI of Morocco and President Emmanuel Macron of France inaugurated Africa's first ever high speed rail line, reported various African media same day.
The 350 kilometer long rail line connects Morocco's largest city of Casablanca and the northern city of Tangier by the Strait of Gibraltar with Gibraltar in Europe just on the opposite side. The contemporary line can support high speed trains running at staggering speed of 320 kilometers per hour, cutting down the travelling time between the two cities by more than half, from 5 hours to just 2 hours and 10 minutes. French made high speed trains called Train á Grande Vitesse (TGV) will be used.
Construction of the Casablanca-Tangier high speed rail line began in 2011 at a cost of $2 billion.
