Zimbabwe's Mnangagwa Sworn In As President
Emmerson Mnangagwa was sworn in as president of Zimbabwe on August 26, 2018. The inauguration ceremony held at the country's national stadium in Harare, was attended by several African heads of state including those of South Africa, Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Rwanda.
Mr Mnangagwa won the highly disputed presidential election with a tiny margin of only 0.8% above the 50% that was needed to avoid a run-off election against his main rival MDC-Alliance's Nelson Chamisa. The latter won 44.3% of the votes. Mr Chamisa refused to concede defeat, claiming widespread irregularities in the election process and lodged a legal challenged to the Constitutional Court. However, the court dismissed his challenge on grounds of insufficient evidence.
