Kabila Confirms Relinquishment Of Power By Naming Successor
On August 8, 2018, President Joseph Kabila of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) confirmed he will not stand for re-election in the country's delayed general elections scheduled for December 2018, by naming his successor. The latter is his staunch loyalist and former interior minister Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary.
Accordingly, Mr Shadary will represent the ruling party People's Party for Reconstruction and Democracy (PPRD) as its presidential candidate in the forthcoming elections.
President Kabila (47) has been in power for 17 years and is barred by DRC's Constitution from standing for re-election. He has exceeded his last mandatory term in office that expired in December 2016, citing national security issues deterrent to preparation of elections.
