Ramaphosa Returns Home Early From Commonwealth Summit

President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa cut short his visit to Britain where he was attending a Commonwealth summit in London and returned home on April 19, 2018, to address ongoing violent protests in the capital of North West province, Mahikeng alias Mafikeng, near the Botswana border.

The protests began on April 18, 2018, with protesters barricading roads, burning down properties, and looting shops, reported South African media. The protesters are demanding availability of jobs and an end of corruption in the province. Also, they are demanding the provincial boss Supra Mahumapelo to be fired. President Ramaphosa is said to have urged provincial police to exercise restrain.
