Botswana's president Ian Khama is reported to be ready to step down as scheduled, on March 31, 2018. He culminated his nationwide farewell tour by which he visited all the country's 57 constituencies, in his hometown of Serowe, on March 27, 2018. In Serowe, the capital of the Bamangwato people, some of which consider him as their paramount chief, the outgoing president was showered with presents that included 143 cows and numerous chickens!
President Khama who is still a bachelor at 65, is stepping down 18 months prior to the end of his second and last mandatory term in office. He will be replaced by the country's vice president Mokgweetsi Masisi who will be inaugurated on April 1, 2018.
Very outspoken president who is dubbed Africa's moral leader in some quarters, Mr Khama is straightforward and often broken what is argued by some to be Africa's leadership taboo of not criticizing directly other African leaders, but at a cost sometimes! For instance, when he told the former president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, to step down on advanced age grounds, the latter retaliated by telling him to mind his own business and concentrate in finding a woman, even a single eyed one, to marry so that people can take him seriously!
