World: UN To Adopt Nuclear Weapon Ban Treaty

After months of negotiations, the United Nations, UN, is set to adopt a nuclear weapon ban treaty on July 7, 2017, despite staunch opposition from USA, Russia, Britain, France, and China, as well as some new nuclear states like India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea. Most member states of NATO also oppose the treaty. Paradoxically, even Japan that suffered massive nuclear attacks in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in1945, by which hundreds of thousands of its citizens were killed does not support the treaty! On the one hand, opponents of the treaty argue that it is unrealistic, with USA citing North Korea as an example of a nuclear state that will never agree to ban nuclear weapons. But then, what about USA per se? Would it ban the weapons if North Korea were to do so? On the other hand, proponents of the treaty led by Brazil. South Africa, Mexico, Austria, New Zealand, and some 141 other countries, believe that the treaty will increase pressure on nuclear states to consider more seriously disarmament. Currently, the world has a total stockpile of 15 000 nuclear weapons, of which USA's and Russia's stockpiles together account to over 90%.
