Zambia General Elections 2026 Commence

On August 13, 2026, about 8 million registered voters in Zambia descended on polling stations to cast their votes in the country's general elections. That was reported by some African media.

The general elections are 3-tier, entailing presidential election, parliamentary elections, and local government elections. The voters are therefore voting to elect the country's next president, members of parliament (MPs), and local government councillors.

Focusing on the presidential election, 14 presidential nominees are said to be contesting for the country's top political position. They include the incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema who seeking a second and last 5-year term in office. He is contesting in the presidential election under the banner of UPND Alliance. His main rival is said to be former Cabinet Minister Brian Mundubile who is contesting in the presidential election under the banner of NRPUP on behalf of a political alliance called Tonse Alliance.

The main issues that may influence the decisions of voters in the general elections and the presidential election in particular, are said to be high cost of living, and high unemployment especially among young people.

The general elections are said to have been largely peaceful, with no significant incidents of violence reported so far. However, Presidential Nominee Brian Mundubile is said to have claimed that the electoral campaign was not free and fair.
