Trouble In Somaliland After Years Of Calm And Peace

Somaliland that declared independence from Somalia in 1991 has so far been relatively calm and peaceful compared to the rest of Somalia. However, that may be changing fast due to reportedly escalating political turmoil and fighting especially in the breakaway nation’s region of Sool, since last year.

As result of the worsening political and security situation there, about 210 civilians have been killed and about 60 000 people have fled into neighboring Ethiopia, reported some African media a few days ago. In addition, about 125 000 people are said to have been displaced internally.
