Updated: Jan 12, 2020
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle the Duchess of Sussex announced in a statement shared on Instagram on January 8, 2020, that they will be stepping back as senior members of the British royal family.
According to the annoncement and some British media, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex intend to earn their own income through work and relinquish their entitlement to money from the sovereign grant. However, the royal couple will continue taking money from Harry's father Prince Charles. Also, they intend keeping their right to police protection as well as retaining their British home at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, Berkshire. Furthermore, they will keep their royal titles and split their time between UK and North America.
Despite been married for just about 21 months, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle are already among the most philanthropic celebrity couples in the world. They are said to have been using the fame and influence emanating from, among others, their royal status, to make invaluable contribution to good causes particularly in Africa. Why they have chosen to abandon one of the main drivers of their philanthropic endeavor is at the moment difficult to comprehend. Notwithstanding, nevertheless, whatever the circumstances behind their unexpected decision might have been, the circumstances must have been unavoidable in their view.
