Mali And Burkina Faso Impose Travel Ban On US Citizens

Mali and Burkina Faso have impose travel ban on US citizens, reported some African media on December 31, 2025.

The travel ban on US citizens by the two countries that follows a recent similar ban by Niger and Chad, is said to be a reciprocation of US government's travel ban on citizens from the 4 West African countries that was imposed last year. US has also imposed total or partial entry ban on citizens from 22 other African countries.

Reportedly, Mali and Burkina Faso in explaining the background of their unapologetic decision, observed that US began the whole thing by imposing travel ban on their citizens without any prior consultation.

Mali and Burkina Faso are member states of the Alliance of Sahel States alias the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) that was founded on September 16, 2023. The other member state of the regional bloc is Niger. The bloc strives to stop looting of their abundant natural resources through adoption of policies that are aimed at ensuring member states benefit from the revenues accruing from extraction of natural resources.

Recently, AES established a development bank with an initial capital of US$ 1 billion.
