Legendary Civil Rights Pioneer John Lewis Dies
Legendary civil rights pioneer and US legislator John Lewis is dead, reported some media on July 18, 2020. He died on July 17, 2020 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, at the age of 80.
Highly respected, John Lewis was one of the pioneers of the US civil rights movement in the 1960s, and particularly the civil rights group called Freedom Riders that staunchly opposed racial segregation in public transport. He is said to have been incarcerated more than 40 times for his civil rights activism and was severely battered in 1965 when brutal racist police violently cracked down a landmark peaceful civil rights march in Selma, Oklahoma.
In 2011 John Lewis was honored by former US President Barack Obama, with the Presidential Medal of Freedom award.
