Britain's Labour Party alias Labour has won landslide victory in the country's general election that was held on July 4, 2024. With only 2 seats left to go, Labour had taken 412 seats of the total 650 seats of the parliament called House of Common there, hence 211 more parliamentary seats than in the previous election. Labour's landslide victory in the 2024 general election comes after 14 years in opposition under consecutive Conservative governments.
On its part, the ruling Conservative Party alias the Conservatives, suffered unprecedented devastating defeat in the general election, managing to take only 121 seats in the House of Commons, having lost a staggering 250 of the parliamentary seats it held hitherto the election.
With the electoral victory, the Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer instantly became the next prime minister (PM) of Britain. The incumbent PM Rishi Sunak conceded defeat in the early morning hours of July 5, 2025, and later in the morning met with King Charles in Buckingham Palace to deliver his official resignation as PM. Just after noon, Sir Keir Starmer also arrived at the royal palace where the King reportedly invited him to form a new government, that he accepted. After that, he became officially Britain's 58th PM.
In his Labour victory speech, Sir Keir Starmer said Labour is back to get Britain's future back, and added, among others, that his party's electoral victory was the beginning of the process of renewal and rebuilding of Britain.
However, PM Keir Starmer assumes power at a time the British economy is confronted with a multitude of formidable challenges, having gone into recession recently, with some sources even citing GDP shrinkage.
