Francia Marquez Becomes Colombia’s First Female Vice President Of African Descent

Francia Marquez (40) has been elected vice president of Colombia. She becomes the first female next vice president of the Latin American nation.


Francia Marquez was the running mate of Gustavo Petro during Colombia’s runoff presidential election held on June 19, 2022, that was won by Gustavo Petro.


Born in 1981 in the country’s Cauca region, Francia Marquez is said to be a staunch environmentalist and activist for rights of Colombians of African descent.


People of African descent constitute about 36% - 40% of Colombia's estimated population of 51 million as of 2021. It is the second largest population of African descendants in Latin America after Brazil.
