Ethiopia on September 9, 2025, launched its gigantic hydropower dam, reported some African media.
The dam that is called Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is located across the Blue Nile at Guba in the country's Benishangul-Gumuz Region.

GERD is 145 meters high and runs 1780 meters across the river, creating a 10.4 million cubic meter reservoir that has been named Lake Nigat.

GERD's hydroelectric power plant has 13 turbines. With installed power generation capacity of 5150 MW (5.15 gigawatts), it becomes Africa's largest hydroelectric power plant, and among the world's 20 largest.
Construction of GERD began in April 2, 2011, and is said to have costed $5 billion. Reportedly, the massive infrastructural project was totally financed with local funds from the government and contributions by citizens.
