Completed Phase One Of Dakar’s Train Express Regional Project Inaugurated

Completed phase one of Dakar’s prestigious electrified standard gauge commuter train project called Train Express Regional (TER) in Senegal has been inaugurated. That was reported by some African and French media on December 28, 2021.

According to the reports, phase one of the project that stretches 36 kilometres from downtown Dakar to the suburban settlement of Diamniadio and entails 13 stations, was officially opened for commuter trains hence commuters on December 27, 2021. Commuter trains entail 72 meter long four car electric multiple units (EMUs), capable of travelling at 160 kilometres per hour. Each EMU has capacity for 531 commuters.

TER is a 55 km electrified standard gauge commuter railway line that links downtown Dakar and the city's Blaise Diagne International Airport. Its construction began in 2016 in two phases, at a cost of Euros 2 billion.

The railway line consists of 14 stations. Completion of phase one implies that only a 19 km stretch to the airport and the airport terminal station are left for construction.
