At least 300 people are feared dead in a huge landslide in Papua New Guinea (PNG), reported some Asian media. It may take quite some time before confirmed death toll from the horrific natural disaster is available, the reports say.

According to the reports, the landslide struck a rural settlement located in the remote highlands of the country's Enga Province, on the early hours of May 24, 2024 (local time), when people were fast asleep.

The landslide that is probably the aftermath of recent torrential rains in the province, is said to have begun in the hills, bringing down with it rocks and other debris onto the affected settlement. As such, it is said to have buried most of the settlement's houses and farms.

Relief, rescue, recovery, and reconstruction efforts by PNG's authorities are said to have commenced and now ongoing. However, the efforts are reportedly being constrained by factors pertaining to the terrain and remoteness of the area surrounding the affected settlement.
