Saudi Girl Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun Gets Asylum In Canada

Africauptodate

A Saudi Arabian girl Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun (18) who recently made global headlines after fleeing her homeland in an effort to reclaim her individual freedom has finally got asylum in Canada, reported numerous media on January 12, 2019. On arrival at Toronto International Airport on January 12, 2019, the very happy looking Rahaf was reportedly branded a brave new Canadian by Canada's foreign minister.

Canada's grant of asylum to the 18 year old Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun, coupled with earlier recognition of the fleeing girl as a refugee by the United Nations, definitely send a powerful message to Saudi Arabia, of global discontent and dismay with its repressive authoritarian regime that is notorious for denying its women their human rights.

Saudi Arabia is one of a handful of countries in the world, that in the 21st century still have no real democratic system of governance. Instead governance is delivered by the so called royal family whose members claim to have birth rights to rule others without electoral mandate. Also, use of regressive and old cultural values and traditions to justify oppression of women is common place there.
