Fleeing Saudi Girl Gets UN Refugee Status
A Saudi Arabian girl Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun fleeing her low gender equality rated country to Australia to seek asylum, but stopped in Bangkok by Thai and Saudi officials enroute to her destination, has been granted refugee status by the United Nations. That was reported by several media on January 8, 2019. The United Nations´organ for refugees, UNHCR, is said to have requested Australia to grant Rahaf refugee resettlement.
Initially the Thai and Saudi officials are reported to have said the 18 year old Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun would be returned to Saudi Arabia, but backed down after the news of the girl´s intentions went viral online.
Reports from other sources say hundreds of Saudi women attempt to flee Saudi Arabia every year due to the country's appalling women rights record.
