World: #Metoo Campaign Spillover Renders Swedish Academy Impotent In Awarding 2018 Nobel Prize
Spillover from a sex abuse scandal emanating from the recent #Metoo campaign's public narrations have rendered the Swedish Academy impotent in awarding the Nobel Prize in literature at least for a while. As such, no Nobel Prize in literature will be awarded in 2018, announced the academy on May 4, 2018.
What happened is this.
In November 2017 at the peak of the worldwide #Metoo campaign, 18 Swedish women narrated to the media of the sexual abuse ordeals they suffered some years back from a man closely linked to the Swedish Academy, called Jean-Claude Arnault. The latter denied allegations.
Notwithstanding, however, the allegations turned out to be catastrophic to the academy, with six of its members resigning over disagreement about how to respond to the scandal created by the allegations. At the same time, there was public outcry about the scandal, with some people saying the scandal and its aftermaths have made the academy irrelevant, while others even said it had become an "adult kindergarten"!
An interesting consequence of the #Metoo movement in Sweden!
